Dal Richards at 95!
Dal Richards graduated in
1937 from Magee where, as a student, he was instrumental in starting
Magee's band program. His music career is legendary and is capsulized
as follows on Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's website:
"For more than 75 years
the music of Dal Richards has been a touchstone of Vancouver's social
history. Dal formed his first band in 1938, and by June of 1940 he was
booked into Vancouver's signature nightspot, the Hotel Vancouver's
Panorama Roof. What started as a six-week engagement stretched into a
twenty-five year run. The Dal Richards Orchestra was the toast of
Vancouver, playing for visiting stars like Jack Benny, Bing Crosby and
Bob Hope - and Dal's weekly national CBC broadcasts from the Roof
ensured his place in the musical history of Vancouver. Dal and his band
have played for most of the City's memorable occasions - the opening of
the Vogue and Queen Elizabeth Theatres, Empire Stadium, Pacific Centre,
BC Place, and the Vancouver Convention Centre...as well as for the
opening of the 2010 Paralympic Games. At age 95 Dal has no intention of
slowing down; he already has a number of engagements booked in 2013,
including his annual 17-day run at the PNE."
VSO has organized a concert and 95th birthday tribute
to Dal on Sunday, January 13th 2013, at 4:00 PM, at
the Orpheum. Dal and his band will join the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra
and UBC Opera Ensemble for an evening of light classics and
swingin' big band standards. Tickets are available through VSO's
website http://www.vancouversymphony.ca/artist/dal-richards/
or by calling VSO's Customer Service at 604-876-3434.

Hunt For Website Stories And
Content
Magee has a strong tradition of Clubs and Other Activities to
promote public service and leadership. We have received a number of
suggestions for stories about alumni who have strong public service and
volunteer records. We plan to post these on a new "Public Service"
page on our website. Do you have such a story or know about someone who
has? Send us your suggestion with some details and pictures and we will
work to include it on our website. Better yet, write the story up and
send it to Barry Rhoades, our Information and Technology Member at brhoades@shaw.ca
Also, if your Class has a reunion, event, website or link that
you want to include on our "Class Reunions and Links" page,
send an email to Barry Rhoades, our Information and Technology Member
at brhoades@shaw.ca.
